About Artwork

The artist collaborated with Indonesia’s postal service, PT Pos Indonesia, to reproduce a series of postage stamps featuring camphor specimens he had drawn from the collections of Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Before entering the philatelic ecosystem, a postage stamp is essentially an object that is purchased, possessed, and ultimately relinquished by its owner.

The camphor imagery inscribed on these stamps embodies the transience of cultural and historical memory. It reflects how the once-solid presence of pre-colonial camphor forests has been transformed into a fragile yet significant paper medium. Through this shift in material form, the work reveals the dissolution and reconfiguration of geopolitical narratives and historical legacies as they circulate, fade, and are continually reimagined.

Aliansyah Caniago (b. 1987 in Indonesia) is an artist currently based in Bandung, Indonesia. He studied Painting at the Bandung Institute of Technology Faculty Art and Design. Through sitespecific interventions, installations and durational performances, he is interested in working directly with communities and developing artworks that could blend-in with the society, entering conflicted areas creatively and trying to repair the damaged environment.

Questions of identity and environment, tradition and modernity have been at the core of his work. The notion of Landscape has played an important role in his practice and he engaged with it in different ways.

In several performances, he explored our close bodily connection with the landscape, how we can blend in or stand out, how we become part of the environment or an extension of it.

vvv
