Exhibition ” A Touch for the Now – Artyści z Tajwanu i Azji Południowej (觸見今日 – 台灣與東南亞當代藝術聯展)” is featuring what’s today in Southeast Asia. Many Asian people was educated under western historical impacts during 1940-1960, and today, why it’s raising the dusts in Southeast Asian? As my points of view, Southeast Asian area is now on the similar path with the European experimental art hub in 1960-1970.

Nowadays as we know, politic and economy is gradually open to public so that new ideas can be considered experimentally and less prohibited by the pressure of the governmental response. And it’s not necessary to fill hundred square meters of “white” spaces full. The cultural landscape is obvious during visiting artists in Southeast Asian countries, and the house is not filled with grand furniture instead of a bunch of bigger than bigger artworks, installations and books, the only path we can walk is in the centimeters. Each work presents a pose, a gesture with the number of languages and cultural context behind the artist and the background of countries.

In other words, contemporary artistic vision is presented by the Southeast Asian countries which is possibly wilder and more endless than we thought today. One point of views is “to see and discover the context at the moment” Why should we think if that? Because living in Asia is very different, due to the difference of time, geography and people, artist absorbed a lot of knowledge from the past. After the time shift creation, knowledge is as the experience of transformation between individuals and societies, and communication become the media between political and economic association. which the curator Yipei Lee mentioned “cultural landscape” as the subject of using the spirit of place and time to be building the concept of pattern for the now and past.

It is corresponding with Yipei’s research through the long-term observation, documentary, field research, and experience in Southeast Asian countries and her hometown. With continuous narration and comparison, the record of cultural landscape can improve the attitude and process, and then to understand its significance. Hope that the exhibition concept can be beneficial in the future.
