SUAVEART concentrates on the cultural value between art and life. Presenting the stories and issues related to “art, life and island”. Creating the borderless dialogues that can be found everywhere in our daily life.

The research-based project and publication is primarily inspired by the group exhibition “Dipl.-Ing. Arsitek: German-trained Indonesian Architects from the 1960s” which encountering Southeast Asian Modernism, the project illuminates the lives and works of Indonesians who studied in Germany and graduated in the 1960s with the degree of Diplom-Ingenieur (Dipl.-Ing.) in architecture. After graduation, many of the newly trained architects returned home and became protagonists of modern Indonesian architecture. Some of them, however, remained in Europe, settling in Germany, Switzerland, or the Netherlands.

In the exploration of SUAVEART, the past artistic practices have been mainly associated with the Southeast Asian region, visual arts, and social issues. Over recent years, there has been a gradual shift towards contemplating art from different dimensions, leading us, unconsciously, towards the realms of environment and living spaces. From events and objects to urban landscapes, we regard spatial serving as cultural narratives, identities, and boundaries, simultaneously witnessing a series of occurrences.

Working in Progress: Reimagine the Identity of Urban Spectrum explores the archival works of Berlin-trained architect Herianto Sulindro (Indonesia, b. 1928 – ), who completed his studies in Germany, worked as an architect for 30 years in Zurich.

Intersecting perspectives from a daughter, an architectural photographer, a migrant Chinese researcher, and a Southeast Asia-focused curator, the project delves into urban landscapes, nature, Chinese-Indonesian migration, and Zurich’s historical development, interwoven with family history and personal narratives.

Over the developing course of approximately a year, we designed and conveyed the structure from online interviews to field surveys, engaging in a relay method to participate in this project. As time went by, based on the guidance of on-site findings, we improvisationally adjusted our research methods, incorporating elements such as blueprints, family photos, letter archives, correspondence working files, oral histories, urban architecture, and transportation infrastructure. We attempted to integrate our respective identity backgrounds and perspectives in different ways to understand Herianto, responding to the context of European Chinese migration and dispersal.

Through different entry points, we interwoven complex stories covering cultural identity, urban design, and historical events, provoking us to further think about the future feasibility of cultural narratives.
