“Islands” offer us inspiration in many forms. They are scattered, irregular—isolated or interconnected. Just like islands dispersed across the sea, the presence of people together can be similarly unstructured. So there’s no need for orderly rows, nor a host detached from the public.

Houseplants play the role of connecting humans and nature within the city. When we invite plants into our homes, we enter a new kind of caregiving relationship—through the sense of smell, we tend to memories of our distant homelands.

If living elsewhere is like dwelling in the wild, chaotic terrain of the mind, then perhaps we can use that metaphor to create islands of plants—through writing practices, we sift through the creases of memory, recovering fragments of precious, fundamental vision.

Let them leap back into memory and dream, as we explore, through shared experience, what a homeland might look like—where humans and nature coexist.
