The exhibition captivates audiences in two major European cities: Zurich and London. Curated by Yipei Lee and Sharo Liang, this thought-provoking exhibition explores the intricate relationship between migrants and urban spaces, offering a deep reflection on how individuals create personal and emotional spaces within foreign landscapes.
It focuses on the theme of migration, examining how the movement of people across borders influences the construction and deconstruction of urban environments. Through a compelling mix of sounds, visual art, and public infrastructure, the exhibition highlights the experiences of migrants as they navigate unfamiliar cities, building new trajectories while maintaining connections to their cultural heritage.
The featured artists, Arne Schmitt, Caroline Ip, Herianto Sulindro (Kho, Lien Hek), and Jill Zheng, present a compelling series of works that bridges the personal and public domains of migrant life. Drawing inspiration from urban planner Herianto Sulindro’s experiences and the migration histories of others, Sulindro’s pieces capture the urban landscape, social phenomena, and ephemeral moments that reflect the nuances of Zurich’s city development. His work resonates with a universal message of resilience, community, and the perpetual search for belonging in cities undergoing constant transformation.
Inspired by strollogy, photographer Arne Schmitt explores the relationship between urbanization and modernization from the 1960s to the early 2000s. Through a series of photographs and urban projects in which Sulindro was involved during his career, Schmitt illustrates how the realization of infrastructure conveys the possibilities of art in shaping cities and artistic practice.
In line with the exhibition’s rhythm, Jill Zheng’s linguistic pieces reflect fragments of displacement and adaptation, embody through space and time. Her works convey a deep appreciation for non-Western voices, as well as natural and cultural landscapes.
Caroline Ip‘s fabric patches interwove memories of migration and multiple identities, exploring themes of displacement, relocation, and the recreation of generational stories spanning both Asian and European experiences. Beyond the sense of belonging, her works reflect on the layers of “making a home” through the observation of gardens, interior homes, and family memories.
In closing, the exhibition invites audiences in both Zurich and London to engage in dialogues about migration, identity, and urban living. The immersive environments at the exhibition venues allow visitors to experience the ‘invisible trajectories’ of migrants in real time, encouraging reflections on how lives are continuously shaped by mobility and the urban spaces inhabited, whether temporarily or permanently.
Lived Space (public)|Jill Zheng (CN)
‘Lived Space’ is the shared title to the two exhibited works, which centre around ‘space’ as the moulding force from public to private. The first piece, ‘Lived Space (public)’, is a visual poem which alchemizes found image, language, graphic arrangement and colour. Running through the center is an intimate dialogue and semiotic interaction between the found image of Bahnhofstrasse-in-plan that Herianto drew during the city development project of the 70’s and the meandering poetic text which mimics the shape of the tram that snake through the very ‘Freifläche/open space’ that Herianto planned in order to reduce car emission. The colour of orange and green from his blueprint radiate and ripple across the rest of the text arranged on different planes from the flat surface, creating architectural and textural dimensions. As everything artfully converges upon the word ‘life’, life is literally given in the act of the space being read, as a conceptual and semiotic process of the public space Herianto developed being lived.
Lived Space (home)|Jill Zheng (CN)
The second piece, ‘Lived Space (home)’, is a poem dedicated and woven to the home where it was born. Stairs connect spaces and are a tactile form for Jill’s writing. Seeking to integrate language and the concrete steps, the poet transforms the staircase into an experiential space that embeds reading with movement. As visitors ascend, they encounter the poem step by step with her handwriting and typographic design referencing the Kho family. The physicality and kineticity play an essential role in conceptualising space – poetic or domestic – as to be experienced, to be lived.
Kinship|Caroline Ip (UK)
“Kinship” uses the fluid and adaptable form of patchwork to explore the multiplicity of diasporic cultural identities, capturing the home in Schubertstrasse as a vessel for memories and experiences of past, present, and future inhabitants.
The quilt features an array of fabrics collected during the Sulindro’s life here, including cutoffs from clothing, remnants from furnishings, and scraps of batik textiles from Indonesia, as well as linen and silk dyed using tea and avocado skins collected during the period of our residency. Colorful blocks echo the spaces of the house, and lines trace plants – from Herianto’s photography, gardening, and blueprints- referencing the significance of nature in his shaping of nurturing spaces, and his family’s mixed cultural identity.
This piece is intended to be held, with its textures and stitches conveying the warmth, heartache, nostalgia, and longing that permeate this space. We invite you to engage with the quilt: feel free to remove it from its clips, wrap it around yourself, and sit on the chairs or bed to read and explore the other objects in the space.
The Art of the Possible|Arne Schmitt, (DE)
In the research phase of this project, Arne Schmitt took photographs of sites in Zurich that Herianto Sulindro worked on as an urban planner. The exact influence and decisions that he took in the complex process of planning and designing of these places are impossible to extract for outsiders, especially in hindsight. Confronting these very public and contextual places with the private environment of the planner, after him having left the house, inspires new paths of thinking about legacy and what traces a person and their work leave behind.

生活空間 (公共)|Jill Zheng (中國)
兩件展出作品的共同標題《生活空間》,圍繞著「空間」作為從公共到私人的塑造力量。第一件作品《生活空間 (公共)》是一首視覺詩,它將現有的圖像、語言、圖形排列和色彩融為一體。
貫穿畫面中心的是赫里安托在70年代城市發展項目中繪製的班霍夫大街 (Bahnhofstrasse) 規劃,圖像與模仿蜿蜒穿過街道的有軌電車形狀的詩意文本之間,創造出親密對話和符號學互動。在平面藍圖中,橙色和綠色有著不同的圖層排列、文字輻射和圖像漣漪,創造出建築和紋理的多層維度。當一切都巧妙地集中在「生命」這個詞上時,生命實際上是在被閱讀的空間的行為中賦予的,作為赫里安托規劃設計的公共空間的概念和符號學過程。
生活空間 (家)|Jill Zheng (中國)
