About Artist:
Evamaria Schaller, born in Graz, Austria, lives and works in/around Cologne. She studied at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne until 2011 and has received prizes, awards and scholarships for her artistic work, which oscillates between performance and video art and can be described as attempt to translate “time into images in space”. She works site-specifically and questions the representation of women.

She is part of the artist duo Jellyspoor, co-founded PAErsche Aktionslabor for Performanceart in Cologne (2011) and was part of the team of Black Kit Performance Art Archive. Hospitality and encounters are important to her. She shows her performances & works internationally (e.g.) in Indonesia, China, Thailand, Philippines, Morocco, Turkey, Poland, France.

My work oscillates between performance art, film and installation. I work with the media film as a documentary instrument. Film with its bodily materiality is a central theme. In my videoperformances I use the recordings to fragment the body into moving particles. I deal with social environment and liminal spaces and use my body as a measure. In my Live Performances I work with daily actions and its absurdity. In these examinations I reflect and intervene with site specific conditions and create actions or in­stall­a­tions through simple, clear ges­tures. I am interested in this inter­ac­tion with site-specific conditions which govern human behaviour and relationships. I transform and decontexualise daily materials t6 mnor found foot­age and combine it. I always have to adjust my own borders – failure as a constant companion.

“I create images as a sculptor with the body as my material. I create patterns as a painter and time is my brush. I intervene as a musician, and the space starts to sound. In these sophisticated moments of encounter I try to share my universe and the way of how I discover it.”

Estudió en la Academy of Media Arts de Colonia hasta 2011 y ha recibido premios, galardones y becas por su trabajo artístico, que oscila entre la performance y el videoarte y puede describirse como un intento de traducir “el tiempo en imágenes dentro del espacio”. Trabaja de forma site-specific y cuestiona la representación de las mujeres.

Mi producción artística oscila entre el arte del performance, el cine y la instalación. Trabajo con el medio cinematográfico como instrumento documental. El cine, con su materialidad corporal, es un tema central. En mis videoperformances utilizo las grabaciones para fragmentar el cuerpo en partículas en movimiento. Me ocupo del entorno social y de los espacios liminales y uso mi cuerpo como medida. En mis performances en vivo trabajo con acciones cotidianas y su absurdo. En estos análisis reflexiono e intervengo en las condiciones específicas de cada lugar y creo acciones o instalaciones a través de gestos simples y claros. Me interesa esta interacción con las condiciones específicas del sitio que rigen el comportamiento y las relaciones humanas. Transformo y descontextualizo materiales cotidianos, metraje encontrado y los combino. Siempre tengo que ajustar mis propios límites: el fracaso es un compañero constante.
