PRESS RELEASE
Friday, 1 September, 2023
The book entitled “The Food is good, the weather is nice, what have you been up to?” (shorted for 食時事 Shishishi) is the result of a co-working process of fifteen artists from Taiwan, Germany and Austria. Our approach is interdisciplinary and intercultural, using traditional and modern means of communication to bridge different cultures, practices and issues.
The book embodies transcultural art in the digital age. Three main topics define our project: Letter Exchange, Cooking as a Method and Weather Forecast. They serve as a means of reflection on art, history, aesthetics, and communication. Letter Exchange represents intimacy, interaction and reflection on digitalisation, Cooking as a Method explores culture, colonial history and identity, and Weather Forecast illuminates the processing of information with global perspectives.
This project has left many traces between Taiwan and Germany for nearly four years with the coordination of SUAVEART. Through physical meetings, postal mails and online collaborations, exchanges and discussions have been established to conceptualize the book. It also formulated trust and friendship. What is the definition of an art book? What will happen to the established division of labor when the artists are playing the main roles in the book production?
Decentralization and transparency played an important role in transnational communication involving artists from Taiwan and Germany. Diverse artist backgrounds also stimulate discussions on history, media, aesthetics, and methodology, all of which are intertwined with the artistic experience. This served not only as an archive for events and communication processes, but also as an invitation for readers to delve deeper into the issues that artists put at the heart of their work.
With the support of institutions such as the NCAF, Kunststiftung NRW, Taipei Artist Village and Kaohsiung Literary Museum, our publication “食時事 Shishishi” aims to engage the reader in an ongoing dialogue, foster deeper intercultural discussions and serve as a template for future projects.
