Abstract

Located in the Majalengka region of West Java, Indonesia, which is abundant in terracotta, shares similar climate and geological characteristics with various regions in Taiwan. However, there are few opportunities to compare the media, architectural spaces, and cultural landscapes of the two regions. This study is the first in the country to employ the concept of “contemporary art” to explore community consciousness and the influence of art, using “terracotta” as a text to interpret future life and to consider the challenges and opportunities faced by the brick industry in urban and rural development.

This research explores three aspects: terracotta as a cohesive force in society, the creative forms and artistry of ceramics, and the significance and translation of tiles in contemporary architectural applications. It delves into the evolution of the brick industry in Taiwan and Indonesia from the Dutch East India Company period to the present, integrating multiple identities under the influence of urban construction and artistic culture. Meanwhile, contrasting the cultural contexts of the two regions to further understand the relationship between land, brick and tile, and living space, and to discuss their contemporary social significance.

In terms of artistic practice, we have chosen to focus on activities initiated by the Jatiwangi art Factory, a local arts and cultural group in a significant terracotta brick and tile-producing area in West Java, Indonesia, which has been developed for many years, focusing on collective memory and ritual dissemination. In Taiwan, the emphasis is on community consciousness shaped by ceramics, contemporary interpretations by artists and cultural workers, and application cases of local Taiwan and Indonesian international exchanges, thereby organizing the current actions of Taiwan teams deeply engaged in Indonesia.

Keywords: Terracotta as a cohesive force in society, media re-interpretation, future life, urban and rural development
